This page has
been constructed as a family homepage for the Verralls family to assist in the research of the name ‘Verralls’.
We, that is brothers Peter and Stephen Verralls, have been
slowly putting together our own family tree and in doing so have realised that Verralls,
in this spelling, is a very scarce name indeed.
The more common spelling of the name is Verrall although there are other variants such as Verrells, Verral, Verrals etc. Earlier origins may be De Veral, Deveral, De Veril or Deveril which were common name among the Normans. There are references to DeVeril or DeVeral around East Kent particularly at some of the castles in the area such as Walmer Castle. It seems clear that the Verrall variation originated around Lindfield in Sussex. The earlier the records the more the records make reference to the Verrall variant in Sussex, particularly the town of Lewes. The Verralls variant seems to have started further east in East Sussex or North West Kent. There is also a Huguenot theory that the family fled religious persecution in France in the 1600s to the south coast of England, where they set up trades and businesses. In recent history there is a strong police influence in the family going back to great great grandfather, Alexander Verralls, who was a Constable in the City of London Police. A Verralls is currently serving in the CID of the London Metropolitan Police and also in the Hong Kong Police. We believe we have traced our lineage back as far as Nicholas Verralls of Seal, Kent who married Sarah Chilmaide in 1718. The couple had four children all of whom spelt the surname differently, namely, Virralls, Verralls, Virrals and Verrols. Here we are greatly indebted to Angela Verrells of Bromley, Kent for sharing her research with us. We hope you find this site interesting as well as the links. More links and associated pages will be added in due course.
